Local Music Alert!!!!

 

We are in for a treat tomorrow night. John McCauley and Ian Oneil of the great band Deer Tick will be performing at Daniel St at 8pm. The show only runs $10 but is 21+. If you don't know anything about them (shame on you). They have a very twangy, grungy-folk vibe. John's voice has some Bob Dylan qualities to it. Opening for them are The Shivers, from NYC. I really don't know too much about them, but from what I was listening to on their myspace...they sound really good! 

The real reason for making it out to the show is for Heirlooms. They are a Hartford based band that looks to make some moves in 2011. Jesse Stanford started the group on his own. Friends were joining in, adding their input and small touches to the songs...now they have a 5-piece band and a four song EP. You can download the EP for free HERE. Written, recorded, and produced entirely by the band this EP is an impressive debut. They seem to be very subtle, placing just the right textures in the right spots. They kind of remind me of Fleet Foxes, which is one of my favorite bands. Really excited for this show! I hope to see yall there tomorrow, be there early Heirlooms is on first.

Gotta Have Daytrotters

Daytrotter is killin it of late. Just recently they had Toro Y Moi and Tennis in studio to give the Daytrotter spin to their tunes. Both of these artists make enjoyable, relaxing summer music. They simplify their songs to the bare necessities for these sessions. Purely delectable. You can download them for free once you register for Daytrotter, which should have been done months ago.

Freelance Whales - 'Weathervanes'

I forgot to post this on the day the album came out!

We briefly spoke about Freelance Whales in a earlier post. Their debut album 'Weathervanes' is in now in stores. It leaked months ago (i think it was relesed in europe a while ago, or its just getting a proper release today) and it has gotten good reviews around the internet. This band knows how to use space as an insturment. They don't rush the music. The first song 'Generation 1st floor' takes almost 2 full minutes before any words are spoken. They let the music start slow with plucking banjos and soft walls of sound, then let it expand and build up. They have a Sufjan Stevens like production value, everything sounds so clean and real on this album...I can only hope that they live up to it when playing live. They are been seen playing subways in NYC, now touring the country. Check out their dates at their Myspace. Buy the album HERE.

Deer Tick - 20 Miles

Deer Tick has put the finishing touches on their new album, 'The Black Dirt Sessions', and they’ve offered up a free mp3 called “20 Miles”. The album is said to be a tad darker, exploring themes like death, mortality, and the existence of God. The song is absolutely wonderful, grab it below.

PS-22 Chorus - Beach House

PS22 Chorus has worked with Passion Pit and covered Phoenix . Here they are covering Beach House's 'Zebra'... learned it in half a day....speechless 

PS22 Chorus Covers Phoenix

The PS22 Chorus is an elementary school chorus from Public School 22 in Graniteville, Staten Island. It is comprised of 60-70 fifth-graders, and is directed by Gregg Breinberg. Students are assigned to the chorus after an annual auditioning process at the beginning of each school year. Here they are playing Phoenix's first song 'Lisztomania' off their hit album 'Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix'.

She & Him - 'Thieves' and 'In The Sun' Video

We mentioned She & Him will be releasing a new album 'Volume Two' out March 23 (here). 'Thieves' is a wonderful track that sounds like it should be listened to via AM radio, or dusty record player in the attic. It's such a pretty song, it makes me sad but in a very happy way. I like how it explodes into a orchestra like ending, something we have yet to see from the duo.

Here is the video for 'In The Sun' off the new She & Him album. The video is precious. A playful 50's style highschool love fairytale, Zooey is just so damn cute! She dances and skips while M. Ward looks cool texting and playing guitar in the hall. The album will be filled with this nostalgic old school twangy folk feel to it. Can't wait! Watch the video below

Tegan and Sara - Blogotheque

Tegan and Sara are a Canadian indie-pop/indie-rock duo. They are also lesbian identical twin sisters. Pretty original if you ask me. They released their sixth album 'Sainthood' last year. In my opinion, it's their best work to date. OA ranked it number 23 on the year's top album list.

Vampire Weekend - Blogotheque

La Blogotheque is an amazing French website that records artists in a very fast, one take, demoish type feel right in the heart of Paris. In 2008 Vampire Weekend stopped in for a session that you can watch Here. They headed back to France in 2010 for another session with La Blogotheque. They breeze through songs off their new album like 'Cousins', 'California English', and 'Horchata'. They also played a few songs off the old album. Usually tracks are broken down into different videos and shot in seperate locations. This time they kept the cameras rolling. Here is a special twenty minute set with Vampire Weekend playing for a very friendly crowd. Enjoy! :)

Homeless Man Covers Radiohead

A friend of mine looks like she was hitting the stumble button very repeatedly at 2am, and came across this video of a homeless man in NYC doing a cover of Radiohead's 'Creep'. The popular talk show 'Opie and Anthony' which is based out of New York, hired the homeless man to do some voice over promo's for their talk show. Then they found out the man had some pipes too. Check out Daniel Mustard's emotional cover below.

Vampire Unplugged

MTV got a hold of America's band Vampire Weekend and brought them to NYC for a taping of MTV Unplugged (weird...I didn't know MTV still did music.) To my surprise their music translates to the acoustic stage very naturally. They seem like the kind of band that needs that electric sound to compete. But a few candles, oriental rugs, and Ezra's voice is perfect setting for this band.

Their album 'Contra' is due out on Tuesday.

Tim Reynolds Solo Acoustic Show

This just in! Tim Reynolds (twitter account) will be playing a solo acoustic gig at Mount Snow's Snow Barn on January 9th, 2010. This is the only acoustic show planned for his tour, so if you live in the New England area, be sure to get up to VT for some fresh pow pow and the sweet sounds of Tim on Acoustic! Also check Tim out playing with his band TR3 (upcoming shows) and this summer with DMB.

Dave&Tim - A Weekend In Vegas

Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds busted out their acoustic guitars for a three night weekend at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. This would be the first chance for a lot of fans to hear Big Whiskey material acoustically. All three nights had their up's and down's with night two clearly taking the cake. With songs like 'Little Red Bird' 'Grace Is Gone' 'Loving Wings' and 'Typical Situation' all fans in attendance got what they paid for. However, once you hear the opening chords of arguably the bands best opener, 'The Stone' you know you are in for a special evening. Busting out cover song 'Angels From Montgomery' for the first time since '01 and rarities like 'Little Thing',  'Lover Lay Down', and 'I'll Back You Up' this is the one show I am really upset I couldn't get to. Hanging out with Tim just five days before his first show in Las Vegas, he is a very down to earth man, and never has too much to say, he doesn't need to say much.
